Long before tea was a daily ritual, it was medicine. According to Chinese legend, the emperor Shennong discovered tea around 2737 BCE, when leaves blew into a pot of boiling water. Whether or not the story is true, tea was certainly being used in southern China by the second century BCEfirst as a treatment for stomach pain, later as a drink for monks who needed to stay awake during meditation. From there, tea spread along trade routes. It reached Japan in the eighth century, where it was drunk by Buddhist priests. It reached Europe much later, in the early seventeenth century, brought by Dutch traders. The British took to it slowly, then completely. By the eighteenth century, tea had replaced beer as the everyday drink of London. To pay for it, Britain shipped opium into Chinaa trade that ended in two wars and changed both countries forever. Today, tea is the second most consumed drink in the world after water. Whole cultures have been built around how to grow it, brew it, and drink it. A leaf, a pot, hot waterand somehow, history.
