Where the Pencil Came From

鉛筆の中身は鉛じゃない、ある嵐の夜に始まった発明の話。

本文を読んでから訳を確認するのがおすすめ。
Despite its name, a pencil contains no lead. The black material inside is graphite, a soft form of carbon. The confusion is centuries old. When a strange black substance was discovered in northwest England in the 1500sexposed by a storm that uprooted a treelocals called it black lead, because that is what it looked like. Shepherds used it to mark sheep. Farmers wrapped it in string to use as a writing tool. Eventually, it was sliced into thin sticks and held in a wooden case, the modern pencil was born. Real lead, the metal, has nothing to do with it. By the time chemists in the late 1700s realized that black lead was actually carbon and renamed it graphite (from the Greek for "to write"), the name pencil lead was already locked into everyday language. Today, every pencil in every school still carries a quiet historical mistake. We have been calling it the wrong thing for four hundred years, and most of us have never noticed.
