What do I mean by a part of a whole?

So let's imagine that we have a pizza.

I'll do it in a pizza colored.

ピザっぽい色で描きます

So I'll do it in orange.

オレンジ色にします

I guess that's roughly the color of a pizza.

だいたいピザの色に近いですね

I guess it's yellow and kind of red for the tomato sauce,

黄色っぽくて、トマトソースは赤っぽい感じで

so yellow for the cheese.

チーズは黄色にします

So let's say that this was a perfect circle.

これが完璧な円だとしましょう

I'm going to try my best to draw a circle right over here.

And let's say that I divide it into four equal parts.

So just like that, I've divided it

into two equal parts.

So there's total of four equal slices of this pizza.

And I don't know, I have olives right over here.

So we can ask ourselves, what fraction of this pizza

Well, we have four total slices.

They're all equal slices.

So we could say one fourth of this pizza has olives.

Now someone said, well, what fraction of this pizza

Well, this fraction has cheese, but it also has olives.

And let's say that I have an apple.

Let's say, actually, I'll draw an apple.

It's a little bit of a strange color for an apple,

but we'll go with it.

So that is my apple right over there.

And if I were to ask you, at least the way that it is

Well, we could say we have a total of one, two, three, four,

five pieces of fruit.

5つの果物があります

So there's a total of five pieces of fruit.

つまり果物は全部で5つです

And then what fraction of those pieces of fruit

そのうちどれくらいの割合が

are yellow?

黄色でしょうか

Well, the way I drew it, I have two yellow pieces

この描き方だと、黄色いのは2つです

right over here.

So we'd say 2 fifth of the fruit is,

and it's strange that I'm writing this in white,

so I'll write it in yellow.

Let me do one more example to just really make

And let me divide it into five equal pieces.

That doesn't look too equal.

So the whole point is to do it equal.

That looks pretty close.

これでかなり近くなりました

So let's assume that these are equal pieces.

これらは均等な分だと考えましょう

So my drawing isn't perfect, but let's assume

all of these pieces are equal.

And I'm hungry.

So let's say that I eat this piece, and I eat this piece.

So they essentially go away.

Well, I have a total of five pieces.

And I ate two of them.

So this is, I've taken them away.
